Abstract
In this paper, we compare the applicability of the planar-effective medium approximation (PEMA) and cylinder-effective medium approximation (CEMA) for analyzing the scattering properties of cylindrical hyperbolic metamaterials (CHMMs). We show that approximation of scattering properties of CHMMs calculated on the basis of the CEMA is better than that calculated using conventional PEMA. We also show the applications of CHMMs as superscatterers.
