Abstract
The scaling of the transmission, absorption, and reflection properties of periodically absorbing media consisting of alternating lossy and lossless layers are studied as a function of the number of periods. These studies show that, at the structure transmission resonances, distributed loss—defined through both attenuation and absorption per unit length—decreases as the number of periods increases. The anomalous effect is the result of redistribution of the field to the lossless regions within the structure.
