Abstract
A waveguide polarizer of acceptable length, high extinction coefficient, and low insertion loss is developed by locating a metal-island film suitably close and parallel to the dielectric film waveguide. The polarizer passes the polarization and severely attenuates the polarization. The operation of the polarizer is based on a selective phase-matched interaction between the two weakly coupled films. The performance of the polarizer is insensitive to small changes in the various physical parameters.
