Color Vision 2018: Introduction by the feature editors

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

This feature issue of the Journal of the Optical Society of America A (JOSA A) reflects the basic and applied research interests of members of the color vision community. Most of the articles stem from presentations at the 24th Biennial Symposium of the International Colour Vision Society (ICVS).

Since it inception in 1917, the Journal of the Optical Society of America has served as an important forum for research on color vision. This Color Vision 2018 feature issue continues that distinguished tradition, presenting peer-reviewed papers from frontiers in both basic and applied research on color vision, including perception and psychophysics, physiology and anatomy, and color-vision deficiencies.

Many of the articles in this issue, including the Verriest Lecture by Professor David Foster, are based on presentations at the 24th Biennial Symposium of the International Colour Vision Society (ICVS) that was held at University Eye Hospital, Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen, Germany, August 18–22, 2017. Contributions to the conference reflect the diversity of interests of the members of the ICVS, who include physiologists, psychologists, physicists, engineers, geneticists, optometrists, ophthalmologists, and other related professionals with interests in color vision and color-vision deficiencies. Attendees represented 22 countries

We are all grateful for the tireless efforts of the Local Organizers—Jan Kremers (lead), Tina Tsai, Anneka Joachimsthale, Avinash Aher, Cord Huchzermeyer, Folkert Horn, Kallene Vidal, and Edith Monczak—and the Scientific Organizers—Jan Kremers, Barry Lee, Almut Kelber, Karl Gegenfurtner, Neil Parry, and Rigmor Baraas. To learn more about ICVS and to find information about regular or discounted student membership, visit the website: https://www.icvs.info. We invite you to join us for the 25th Biennial Symposium, to be held in Riga, Latvia, in July 2019. The editors of this special issue are grateful to the contributors and referees who made this issue possible. We especially thank the Editor-in-Chief, P. Scott Carney, for the opportunity to publish in this special issue and JOSA A staff for their patient and diligent assistance.

Professor David Foster

The International Colour Vision Society (ICVS) awarded the 2017 Verriest Medal to Professor David Foster at the 24th Biennial ICVS Symposium that took place in Erlangen, Germany, August 18–22, 2017. This award was established in 1991 in memory of the founding member of the Society, Dr. Guy Verriest, and honors outstanding contributions in the field of color vision.

David Foster’s distinguished career epitomizes the multidisciplinary nature of vision research. It began at Imperial College, London, where he studied physics and went on to do a Ph.D. in vision with W. D. Wright in the Applied Optics Section. He subsequently held posts at Imperial College (Department of Physics), Keele University (Department of Communication and Neuroscience), Aston University (Department of Vision Sciences), and the University of Manchester (initially in the Institute of Science and Technology, Department of Optometry and Neuroscience). He is currently Professor of Vision Systems and formerly Director of Research in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, the Physiological Society, and the Optical Society of America.

David Foster’s research has advanced our understanding of color vision for over 35 years. His studies of color constancy report landmark discoveries. The breadth of his contributions includes work on rod–cone interactions, color vision deficiency, color perception of natural scenes, and hyperspectral imaging. In addition to his own research, he has tirelessly nurtured the entire field of visual science, most notably as a co-founder and longtime editor-in-chief of Spatial Vision and as an editor, senior editor, and since 2013 the editor-in-chief of Vision Research.
