Abstract
A taper with a small angle of about 5 mrad in a birefringent thin-film waveguide can act as a TM0− TE0 mode converter. Depolarization and phase synchronism are the key physical factors. The waveguide was a Ta2OxNy film. A maximum conversion efficiency of 90% was obtained. Dependence of conversion efficiency on the taper angle and on the angle of incidence is studied theoretically and experimentally. A theoretical explanation of the phenomenon is given.
