Abstract
Psychophysical techniques have been employed to study the visual response to sinusoidal, spatially varying stimuli. The maxima and minima of luminance in the pattern presented to the eye have been measured subjectively and objectively. The influence of the parameters, spatial frequency, object contrast, and average luminance of the sine-wave distribution on simultaneous contrast well above threshold have been investigated in the mesopic region. Several systematic behaviors of the visual system under normal viewing conditions are elucidated. The results indicate that different physiological effects cause the contour-perception phenomena.
