Abstract
Recently measured photoabsorption cross sections for argon, krypton, and xenon are used to calculate the refractive indices and Verdet constants of these gases at ultraviolet wavelengths. The results for the refractive index of argon are in quite good agreement with experimental measurements. For krypton and xenon the calculations suggest that experimental values of the refractive index at 1216 Å are too high.
