Abstract
This paper is a review of the basic optical properties of single-layer thin films, both metal and dielectric, with particular reference to their optical constants. Differences between the optical constants of materials in bulk and in thin films are discussed. In the case of aggregated metal films the Garnett theory gives a satisfactory interpretation of these differences.
