Abstract
Equations and methods are developed for computing the lens powers, separations, and lens shapes of preliminary thin lens designs of Taylor-type triplets. The three lens powers and two spaces are determined by specified values of equivalent power, Petzval sum, longitudinal chromatic aberration, lateral chromatic aberration, and spherical aberration. The three lens shapes are determined by desired values of the three Seidel sums relating to coma, astigmatism, and distortion. Procedures for replacement of thin lenses by equivalent thick lenses and for final trigonometric adjustment are outlined. The methods given are not limited to the case of the infinitely distant object, but may be used to determine a system for any specified magnification and having any moderate values of the eight independent variables.
