Practical Design for an ICP Demountable Plasma Torch

Abstract

Conventional plasma torches are made entirely of quartz tubes welded together by a glassblower. The three tubes must be carefully aligned to ensure concentricity in the fabricated product. One problem associated with this style of torch is that, when one tube is damaged or deteriorates with use, the torch must be removed from service and either repaired or discarded. The repair of glass torches can be expensive and requires the expertise of a skilled glassblower. Demountable torches, in which tubes are mounted in a base, were developed to overcome these problems.
