Abstract
We have recently found a simple and inexpensive way of stabilizing the flow of nitrous oxide in atomic absorption spectrophotometry. This gas is now commonly used as a support gas for the determination of elements which form refractory oxides, e.g., aluminum, silicon, and titanium. Since the atomic absorption of these elements is critically dependent on the flame conditions, small variations in the composition of the gas mixture lead to erratic readings. Thus when determining percentage amounts of these elements, e.g. in aluminosilicates, it is essential to maintain better control than is needed for minor constituents.
