Abstract
The manufacture of titanium carbide cutting tools requires a rapid analytical method for process control analysis. These cutting tools are essentially titanium carbide particles cemented with metallic nickel and molybdenum by liquid-phase sintering. The quality of the cutting tools is maintained by controlling the nickel and molybdenum content within a narrow range, at approximately 12 per cent. Since conventional chemical methods require about eight hours for a nickel and molybdenum analysis, this investigation was initiated to determine the feasibility of using x-ray spectrography for rapid process control analysis.
