Abstract
About 20% of the sample required to fill a conventional one-cm ultraviolet spectrophotometer cell is actually traversed by the instrument beam. Clearly, then, only 20% of the sample present in the cell is absorbing energy and thus producing an instrument reading. Such inefficient utilization of sample is ordinarily no disadvantage–the sample concentration is adjusted accordingly. However, with a limited amount of sample, it becomes increasingly important to achieve a high ratio of sample volume to cell volume.
