Musk xylene and musk ketone can be mistaken for trinitro toluene by some explosive detectors. A detection principle based on surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is able to identify unambiguously the nitro aromatic compounds by their SERS. For details see the paper by Wackerbarth et al., pp. 4367-4371.
