Abstract
An expression is derived relating beam current distribution to the image orthicon's bar chart response. The current distribution is computed using bar chart response data, and the beam's noise is calculated. The two-dimensional optimum filter for a point signal is derived, resulting in the concept of area integration filtering. It is shown that a simpler rectangular filter is only 17% less efficient. A conceptual detector element is defined with signal-to-noise ratio equivalent to the optimum filter's. The element's size is related to the measured beam spread. Finally, an expression relating the filtered signal-to-noise ratio to the detector element area is obtained.
