Abstract
Quantitative measurements are reported for the spectral distribution of energy at 4-mm wavelength for three reflection gratings. These 50-cm × 100-cm gratings have the same grating space, 2λ, the same groove width, λ/4, and depths of λ/8, λ/4, and 3λ/8, respectively. Their behavior is roughly similar in general. As expected they show only weak P anomalies but very strong, narrow, dark S anomalies. One of the dark S anomalies for the shallow grating has a notch corresponding to an intensity decrease by a factor of 40 for a change of angle of incidence equal to the theoretical resolving angle (0.5°) of the telescope. As the grooves get deeper this anomaly gets wider and the intensity drop is much less. A preliminary theory predicted the existence of the dark anomalies at the correct angles.
