Abstract
In applications in which free-space optical interconnections need to combine high efficiency, low cross talk, and a high degree of parallelism we suggest that refracting optics is preferable to diffracting optics. If surface-relief diffracting components are to be used in high-performance systems, they must be manufactured with very high spatial resolution.
