Abstract
The index of refraction n and the extinction coefficient k of liquid sulfur in the 0.4–2.0-μm wavelength region were measured at several temperatures between 121 and 183°C. From these data the reflectance R was calculated. These parameters show a change in behavior with increasing temperature. The n vs temperature curves for λ = 0.4 and 0.45 μm show an earlier rise with temperature compared with those for longer wavelengths. Results for cooling the liquid from around 180°C reveal an overall difference relative to heating the liquid from 121°C. Values of n for the supercooled liquid down to 85°C are given. A discussion of the results is presented.
