Abstract
Over the past two decades, a great deal of progress has been made in the development of high-speed optoelectronic components. Semiconductor lasers, photodetectors, and electro-optic modulators with bandwidths in the tens-of-gigahertz range have been realized. This coupled with the maturity of fiber-optic communications technology, has created an active field of research and development in which photonic technologies are used to accomplish a variety of Microwave-signal distribution and processing functions. These functions include generation, modulation, switching, filtering, and transmission of microwave signals; injection locking, time-shifting, phase-shifting, and frequency modulation of microwave oscillators; of spectrum analysis and signal identifications; and circuit and material characterizations.
