Abstract

The cumulative distortions over long erbium-doped-fiber-amplifier (EDFA) repeatered transmission systems will induce degradations resulting from three main effects: group-velocity dispersion (GVD), nonlinear Kerr effect, and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) generated by EDFA’s.1,2 It is necessary to develop numerical models for predicting link behavior. This work, supported by France Telecom, compares the theoretical bit-error-rate (BER) results with those obtained in a 2.3-Gbit/s circulating loop by a bit-parity technique.
