Abstract
The propagation wave vector and field distributions of guided waves become anomalous when one or both of the semi-infinite media bounding a thin dielectric film or a single interface exhibit field-dependent refractive indices.1 Such behavior has been demonstrated experimentally2 for a nonlinear cladding. When both media are nonlinear, multiple new branches with power thresholds appear.1,3 Examples of the variation in the guided-wave effective refractive index are shown in Figs. 1 and 2 for TE0 and TE1 guided waves, respectively.
