Abstract
Microscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing many diseases, but conventional microscopes are costly, require electricity, lack portability, and can cause eye strain. Here, we describe a low-cost, portable, projection microscope for medical diagnostics of urine and stool samples. The microscope was designed and prototyped at Stanford and tested at a district hospital in South Coast Kenya for presence of soil transmitted helminthes and schistosomiasis haematobium, with promising results.
