Abstract
In recent years ytterbium doped crystalline laser materials successfully provide powerful diode pumped laser operation due to low quantum defect that minimizes heat generation inside the active volume. Simplicity of two levels energy structure of the ytterbium ions leads to elimination of up-conversion and excited-state absorption losses. Broad emission bandwidth around 1 µm makes ytterbium materials suitable for femtosecond mode-locked lasers and chirped pulse amplifiers.
