Abstract
Since the first demonstration of negative-index materials (NIM), these types of artificial materials are enjoying widespread attention for applications such as super lenses or stealth capabilities. Measurements in the terahertz frequency range of composite NIMs fabricated using split-ring resonator (SRR) structures and continuous wires, have only been performed in propagation directions normal to the SSR plane. In this direction however, the SRR NIM does not exhibit a negative index of refraction. Thus there has not been a direct measurement of a negative index of refraction at THz frequencies so far.
