Abstract
Optical frequency division multiplexing (FDM) is a promising system for enlarging the transmission capacity and improving the flexibility of optical fiber networks. The arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) multiplexer1 is a key device for such FDM systems where it is used as a frequency router. Practical system use, however, requires a polarization insensitive AWG with multiple channels and a flat passband. This paper describes recent progress on AWGs based on silica-based planar lightwave circuit (PLC) technology and their application to FDM systems.
