Abstract
Recently it has been shown that multiply doped laser crystals, e.g., 15% Er, 1% Nd:YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) are capable of lasing simultaneously on transitions of both dopant ions.1,2 It has also been noticed that the depopulation behaviors of different energy levels change significantly compared to singly doped crystals. For example, in 15% Er, 1% Nd:YAG Shi et al.2 observed depopulation of the 4F3/2 state of the Nd3+ ion in 8 µs compared with 240 µs in 1% Nd:YAG. However, the limited response time of the detection system prevented them from seeing fast processes, and so the basic depopulation mechanism of the 4F3/2 state of the Nd3+ ion remained unclear.
