Abstract
Previous theoretical and experimental studies have shown that a nonlinear external cavity can dramatically enhance mode-locked operation.1-4 The pulse shortening mechanism occurs by the coherent addition of self-phase modulated pulses from the external cavity and has been termed additive pulse mode-locking (APM).3 One drawback in previous systems was that active mode-locking was required to initiate the short pulse operation.
