Abstract
Considerable progress has been made on InGaAsP/InP lasers, since the first one to operate cw at room temperature was reported only a few years ago. These lasers now span the spectral range from 1.1 to 1.65 μm, with most attention focused on sources for the 1.3-μm minimum fiber dispersion region and the 1.5-μm minimum fiber loss region. Research in this field has led to a large number of promising structures. Some have been designed specifically for high power and application to multimode fiber systems. Other lasers have been designed for single-transverse mode operation and use with single-mode fibers. Much recent work has centered on sophisticated structures for truly single-frequency operation, which will permit the long-distance transmission of very high bit rate signals without fiber dispersion penalties.
